How The ABC’s of Freezer Cooking Became A Best Seller Video

If you’re looking for a quick video, this one isn’t it. I tried not to leave anything out. If you enjoyed the video and want to discuss it, why not share it on Facebook or Twitter and see what your followers and friends...

Writing When You Feel Like a Failure

I’m going to be honest for a minute.  I truly hope this doesn’t come across as a “humble brag”.   I simply want to be frank with my emotions, because I know there are some of you out there experiencing the same ones. I just realized it’s been 1 year since I hit “publish” on my book, The ABC’s of Freezer Cooking.  It got me thinking, and it also got me feeling like a failure. A big fat failure……… The ABC’s of Freezer Cooking has gone on to be an Amazon best seller for many months, it’s helped supplement my income, and it’s boosted my other books’ sales. I’ve received letters from women that my book, Honoring a Child Born to Heaven, has blessed.  Every time I open a letter where a grieving mom pours her heart out I’m floored God chose my words to minister to them. Then there are the reviews on our Amazon freebie Called to Write, I read a few of them one night and I literally started crying, something that my husband and I had written struck a cord with Christian writers.  Our little book was a blessing.  Could it be possible that our words spur on another Christian on to write what God has laid on their hearts? And yet I feel like a failure. I feel like my words have no purpose, I feel like I’m not doing enough marketing, I feel like I’ll never be a “full-time” writer.  I feel so desperate for joy. Why in the world would an “Amazon Best-Selling Author” as I can blushingly call myself feel like...

The Video About The ABC’s Of Freezer Cooking

So this blog post is a bit of an apology.  I actually asked my husband to write it for me. He said no.  He’s right I need to do this. When you join our e-mail list for this blog we send you an eBook and a video course.  The problem is I’ve been dragging my feet  avoiding sending out the next video. Here’s why, it’s so personal.  The video (and yes I’ve already made it) is just me talking about “The ABC’s of Freezer Cooking.”  How it came about, what we did to see it become a best seller and how God blessed it. In my head I know that the story of this eBook, that has been downloaded nearly 90,000 (this number boggles my mind) would be a blessing. The video has information about the things we did wrong and the things we did right. I know will help get your story into the hands of more people. But, I feel like it’s bragging.  I feel like somehow I’m being cocky.  And I don’t want you to think that’s who I am, because I desperately hope that that’s not the type of person I am. So I just haven’t sent the video.  I made myself get busy doing other things, and just haven’t sent it. And on the other end of the spectrum, I’m afraid you’ll hate it.  I’m afraid you’ll think I’m weird.  I’m afraid you’ll think it’s a waste of time. And I can’t help but wonder, if Satan is behind some of my insecurities.  I have a hunch that he doesn’t want other Christian writers...

When Writing Becomes A Distraction

Yesterday I had a massive allergy attack that resulted in 4 doses of allergy medicine that made me sleepy and gave me a sneezing fit that lasted all day.  So rather than work on my current projects last night I was forced to lay in bed while tears streamed down my face because the allergy fit moved from my nose (for which I was grateful) to my eyes (for which I was not so grateful). If I had to be miserable though I decided to at least watch something that would make me happy so I chose 19 Kids and counting.  In one of the episodes I watched, Jim-Bob (his name always makes me smile) and Michelle Duggar were writing their second book. The interviewer asked them if their 19 children were a distraction to their writing.  Then Michelle said something that I know will stick with me for years.  She said: Our children aren’t distractions, they’re our priority, writing this book is the distraction. We MUST remember as writers, that our writing, even if it is our career and provides for our livelihood, is a distraction to more important things. God must be preeminent over everything in our lives, then our marriages and families must come next.  If our writing comes before these things we FAIL even if writing is our ministry. As a Christian writer and blogger I always have a mile long to-do list.  Between guest posting, blog post ideas, affiliate advertising, and writing my own eBooks, there are always at least 20 things that I need to do immediately.  Obviously it’s impossible to do 20...

The 2 Most Important Things You Need To Do As a Christian Writer

I’m sure you’ve been there, God has laid a burden on your heart to write something.  Maybe it was a “simple” blog post, maybe it was a nonfiction book, perhaps a novel, or maybe it was even a letter to send to an agent.  Whatever it was you knew God himself was calling you to write it.  There’s just one little problem: The words just won’t come. You try every writing technique you know, you outline, you stare at the computer, you’re ready to pull your hair out.  The idea is there, it’s constant in your mind, but you just can’t express it. I know some people might not like what I’m about to write, but I believe with all my heart it’s true. We war as Christian writers against the forces of darkness. I had a dream last night I was in a spiritual battle, I was surrounded by others who wanted to destroy my husband and I. It wasn’t until I started claiming the strength of Christ and claiming Jesus as my High Priest that those who surrounded me began to dissipate and let me through. There were times in the dream where no words would come to my mouth, and all I could do was whisper, “Jesus fight this battle for me, it’s your strength that will overcome.” I’m not the type of Christian who looks for dark forces behind every corner, but friends, Satan does not want you or me to be an empowered Christian writer.  He wants us to be weak and rely on your own abilities and strength.  He doesn’t want us to...

Here’s The Thing About Guest Posting

For those of you who might be new to our story, my husband and I are both writers.  I started a blog a few years ago and we’ve published some eBooks. The eBooks have been successful, but up until recently I have not been able to get subscribers for our blogs.  I say up until recently because things have since changed and our blog subscribers more than doubled in just 2 months.  Woot-Woot. The secret?  It’s actually pretty simple and I wish I would have been serious about doing it sooner. The secret is guest posting. Instead of focusing so much on posting to our own blogs we’ve reached out to existing audiences and tried to share great content that other bloggers would enjoy sharing with their readers. Here’s the thing about guest posts though…….sometimes they’re hard to introduce. I have been trying to figure out how to write an intro to our two latest posts and somehow make them relevant to this audience but I’m pulling my hair out and I have writers block. So I’ll just throw the links out there.  These are both fantastic, up and coming bloggers.  Check out our posts, leave a comment, and subscribe.  You’ll enjoy both of these blogs and they’re worth your time. You can read my husband’s post about Sticky Pages in the Bible at Man of Depravity and you can read my post about The 10 Commandments of Crock Pot Cooking over at Jen Harris’ blog. Take Away Tip For the Day: Make new friends and guest post more. Keep Writing For The King KM Logan PS: Today (Friday)...

Writing About Hope In A Broken World

There is pain in this world. It is there because sin is in this world. God’s design for Earth and all of us was perfection, unparalleled beauty, and constant contact with the Eternal Creator. When tragedy paints its hurt across newsreels and headlines, we have a tendency to lose hope. We wonder why the pain is there and moreover, why it is so prevalent. The truth is there is only one hope for mankind and that is Christ Jesus. The only assurance we can have in this life is found in our redeemer. We in the body of Christ must see tragedies like Gosnell’s massacre of infants, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, the Sandy Hook shooting, or the movie theatre shooting in Aurora as reminders as to where hope can be found. It is not in men but in God. As writers, we must use the passion and talent God has placed in us to share the hope of redemption to a lost and dying world. My heart aches for those who have lost loved ones in these tragedies, but we cannot stop a bomb that has detonated or place the bullets back into the fired gun. We must instead dwell on what we can do through Christ. We must write about the hope. The only true hope found in this life in Jesus. We must have the holy boldness to share our hope to everyone we encounter. Whether that is someone in the grocery store, a friend on Facebook, or a reader of your blog or article, we need to make the effort to pour Christ’s hope...

The Discipline of Rest

The stress of a 24/7 society has you deliriously busy and woefully unrested.  The bags under your eyes are growing even while you read this article. Maybe you even read the previous sentence more than once because your fatigue has lightly tossed your brain like a salad at Olive Garden (mmm…breadsticks). Maybe you get distracted easily and find it impossible to focus on work, writing, or even spiritual devotion (mmm…breadsticks). If this is you, I have a wonderful bit of news that will lift the pressure of a nonstop world off your shoulders. But first, let’s talk about how cranky and useless we are! The problem most of us have is we work too hard. We stay up late and get going early. (Especially us writers) We run ourselves ragged to please and help others. We even overwork ourselves at church because we believe if we don’t do “it” no one else will. The end result after a few short months is a tired and worn out saint that is less effective and probably at some level a little bitter. We work too hard and too long for a couple of reasons. We could be working long hours at home or at work because we are worried about money. Rest assured God has paid your bills so far, and so long as you are faithful in giving (yeah, I’m talking about that dirty word, tithing) to God, he will bless you. David wrote in Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” David never...

Finding Your Voice As A Writer

You have a voice. When you open your mouth to speak, the tone, volume, and speed at which the words are expelled are a representation of who you are. When you hear James Earl Jones or Ben Stein speak, they have a distinct sound and a distinct voice.  The same ought to be true of your writing. The author’s voice matters whether you’re writing fiction or a blog post lamenting the latest failed pinterest idea. You might say, “CM, I don’t have a voice” and to that I respond “Bah, of course you do!” Read some of your work. You will likely notice trends and patterns in your writing. Some of the patterns you will find are dreadful. A pattern of run-on sentences would be considered a “bad habit,” but it also would inform you that you tend to write with a faster pace (which isn’t a bad habit). Another way to discover your own voice is to write about a particular event in your life, and compare your words to the words of others. That is the challenge for today (you didn’t think this website was for passive readers, did you?) is to write about your baptism. The length and form are not important, but be sure tell the story by showing the reader what is happening instead of telling (i.e. “I felt happy” vs. “The cold waters couldn’t even shake off my smile”). I hope you get the picture. To start us off, I wrote a poem about my baptism. I hope it is a blessing, and I hope it gets the discussion rolling.  Try writing your...

What Type of a Writer Are You?

Here’s a question for you: Are you a writer? I see you looking down at your feet.  It’s okay you can admit it.   Even if it’s just a hobby, even if you only make a few dollars a month from royalties, even if you just have a secret journal no one else knows about: If you write, then you’re a writer. So what type of writer are you?  The definition of writer has greatly broadened these days.  No longer does saying “I’m a writer” automatically mean you’ve written a book.  We’re a little curious. Somehow you’ve stumbled upon our website for Christian writers that hasn’t even officially launched yet. And we really want to know: What do you write? Is it eBooks? Do you have a blog?  Do you have 10 blogs? Do you have a publishing contract? Do you want one? Are you self-published? Do you want to be? Have you had any Amazon best-sellers? Or maybe you just have an idea rolling around in your head for the next great book, that will change the world. We want to know!  The suspense is killing us.  What do you write? Let us know below in the comments, and be sure to include a link to your blog, book, or whatever.  (Limit yourself to one link though or it may be stopped by spam filters). So seriously tell us, and let us know what you...
